CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Note: The best level is your level. Therapeutic classes for back issues are specifically noted. If you have back issues, please come to a backcare class unless you have special permission to take a general class. If you are unsure of your level, you can take a basics class or the backcare or scoliosis introductory series. You can ask me or your regular Yoga Union teacher. A private lesson is always a good way to begin, especially if you have a number of issues or are nervous about joining a group class. Contact me about this here.

BASICS (LEVEL 1)
This class is for beginners or those wishing to refresh their knowledge of the basic poses, including standing poses, modified supported shoulderstand, mild backbends, forward extensions, and headstand preparations. Poses are demonstrated and taught in a clear and methodical way with emphasis on alignment. No yoga experience required.

LEVEL 2
This class progresses beyond the basics and is appropriate for students who have been practicing yoga consistently for a year and are ready to undertake more demanding inversions (headstand, handstand, and full shoulderstand in the center), deeper backbends, forward extensions, and hip work.

HERNIATION & POSTURE BASICS (backcare)
This class offers a basic introduction to yoga for herniation and other disc issues. It teaches the fundamentals of safe movement, yoga, and prop use necessary for home practice and participation in more advanced herniation and backcare classes.  Strongly recommended for students with disc issues who are new to alignment-based yoga.

HERNIATION & BACKCARE LEVEL 2 (backcare)
Teacher permission required.
For students with mature yoga practice who have been taking Yoga for Herniation and Backcare classes on a regular basis for a minimum of 1 year. This class assumes clear understanding of safe movement with a neutral spine, rope and sling use, and yoga postures for herniation.  You will progress into more challenging poses and pranayama in a safe context.

SCOLIOSIS & POSTURE BASICS (backcare)
For students with spinal asymmetry. All levels are welcome, especially those new to yoga for scoliosis.  Learn not only how yoga can be practiced safely in the presence of asymmetry, but how it can correct habitual patterna and halt the progression (or even reduce!) scoliosis. These classes help increase balance and proprioception, lengthen the spine, reduce compensatory patterns, and create the strength required to sustain a new pattern while improving overall posture.

SCOLIOSIS & POSTURE LEVEL 2 (backcare)
Teacher permission required.
For students with spinal asymmetry and mature yoga practice who have been taking the Yoga & Scoliosis or Backcare classes on a regular basis for a minimum of 1 year. This class progresses beyond the basics and therefore assumes the student understands his/her curves and has mastered how to work with them as taught in introductory classes.  More challenging poses, including strengthening work and inversions, are taught. The Intermediate class is not for students new to yoga for scoliosis, even if you have done another type of yoga before.

YOGA FOR SCOLIOSIS & FUSIONS (backcare)
A spinal fusion for scoliosis can present challenges for your yoga practice. Explore how yoga can help relieve tension from compressed areas while stabilizing hypermobile areas adjacent to the fusion(s) and preserving the integrity of the instrumentation. Pre-requisite: scoliosis basics classes or series recommended. If you do not have a fusion, scoliosis basics classes or series and teacher permission are required.

SCOLIOSIS BASICS SERIES (5-Part Introductory Series)
This 4-week series covers the foundational skills you need to work with your scoliosis and fusion(s). You will be in the company of others like yourself who are new to the practice and will learn how to work with your scoliosis to develop greater spinal length as well as ease and strength throughout the body. Learning these skills through a series will help you make a commitment to your yoga practice and integrate smoothly into the Yoga Union Scoliosis Basics or Fusion classes.
